🇬🇧Last night, I was invited to the Kazakh Film Festival in Paris for the screening of the film Olma Djon.
It's a beautiful, intense story with fascinating images. The unreal beauty of Kazakhstan, but also the magnificent images of Uzbek director Victoria Yakubova.
Unable to speak to his daughter, who has become mute, Bolot receives a visit from a shaman who awakens an old lullaby in him.
Guided to a snow-covered orchard (his inner world), he finds his ancestors and his mother.
This encounter restores the voice of his heart, the one that can reach his daughter.
Of note is the wonderfully accurate and emotional performance of Kyrgyz actress Natasha Mashkevich, who plays Bolot's wife.
Beyond cinema, festivals are also an opportunity to make enriching encounters, and I had the pleasure of meeting French diplomat Johan Schitterer, who has worked extensively in Central Asia, French documentary filmmaker Mélanie Zadeh, and the Director of the Kazakh Cultural Center, Ms. Bayan Znanbauova.
Congratulations to André Ivanov, founder and director of this festival, which deserves to be better known!
