Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Near the temple of Preah Khan, I come across a young long-tailed macaque enjoying a piece of fruit. With his oversized eyes and prominent ears, he immediately reminds me of Nosferatu, the legendary vampire.

Fortunately, the resemblance stops there: this little fellow is perfectly friendly, with none of the sinister character of his cinematic counterpart.

I am always struck by how much monkeys resemble us.

Their expressions, their gestures, their curious little faces; sometimes, the line between them and us seems surprisingly thin.

Of course, they are covered in hair.

But then again, so was Demis Roussos!

Nearby stands Preah Khan, whose name means “sacred sword” in Khmer. This magnificent Buddhist monastic complex is distinguished by its so-called flat architecture and its surrounding moat, a reminder of the grandeur of the ancient Khmer civilization.

Between the timeless stones of the temple and this mischievous young macaque, Cambodia offers a wonderful encounter between history, wildlife and a touch of humour.
