Cauterising blood vessels is an essential part of the operation. For a newcomer like me, this is a truly astonishing moment in the operating theatre. The smell of burning flesh is persistent, yet far from frightening, as I know it is necessary for the procedure to go smoothly and for the patient’s well-being. White smoke rises into the air, almost as if symbolising the patient’s rebirth from the ashes.
