Battambang, Cambodia.
From the heights of Phnom Sampov, a 140-metre hill whose silhouette resembles a ship seen from afar, a northern pig-tailed macaque watches me with a single eye.
The other is missing, perhaps lost in a fight with another male.
These primates can be fiercely territorial, and life within their groups is not always peaceful.
Despite his apparent vulnerability, there is something remarkably strong about his gaze. He lives with his group in a cave on the hillside, in a world where survival is a daily struggle.
Yet the challenges facing this species extend far beyond individual encounters.
Habitat loss and human pressure continue to threaten its future.
Looking at this macaque, I am reminded that wildlife is not always beautiful in the conventional sense.
Sometimes, it is the marks left by life itself that make an animal's portrait so powerful.
