A close-up of a zebra, where stripes become lines, patterns and almost abstract forms.
I have always been fascinated by the beauty of lines, and the zebra offers a natural masterpiece of contrasts and rhythm.
But these stripes are more than a visual wonder. Research suggests they help deter biting flies, particularly horseflies and tsetse flies, by disrupting their ability to land.
They may also help zebras recognize one another and provide some protection against biting insects in the African heat.
Nature rarely draws without a purpose.
Yet beyond their function, these lines possess a beauty that needs no explanation.
