Battambang, Cambodia.

In this photograph, I wanted to capture raw, unfiltered emotion through the intense gaze of a northern pig-tailed macaque.

He came down from the mountain and looked me straight in the eye.

What a marvellous encounter! I have always loved monkeys.

There is something about them that feels so familiar, so close to us.

Their expressions, their gestures, the curiosity in their eyes; they seem to share so much of our own nature.

He paused for a moment, studying me, perhaps wondering what this strange human was doing there. Or maybe, more pragmatically, whether I was finally going to offer him a banana or a juicy mango!

Then, just as suddenly as he had appeared, he leapt into a tree, jumped to another, and vanished into the green canopy.

The encounter lasted only a few moments, but that gaze stayed with me. Sometimes, all it takes is a look to feel an unexpected connection between two very different worlds.
