Hollamsbird Island, Namibia

The African penguin can measure between 60 and 70 cm and weigh between 2 and 4 kg. Its feathers are black on the back and white on the front. The forehead is spotted with tiny black dots, forming a constellation unique to each individual.

The Cape penguin's diet consists mainly of fish (anchovies, sardines, etc.) and small marine invertebrates, such as squid and crustaceans.

They generally hunt these by swimming within a 20km radius of the coast. The African penguin is a monogamous species.

Considered a luxury food until the middle of the twentieth century, penguin eggs were massively harvested, accelerating the decline in populations.

Photo published in the Musée de St-Cyprien exhibition catalogue following the exhibition ‘L'Odyssée de Grégory Herpe’, a retrospective of his work, from March to June 2017.
