Lagrasse, France
The abbey of Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse is located in the commune of Lagrasse in the Aude department, and was founded in 779 under the protection of King Charlemagne.
Canons live there (you can see them walking around the grounds after mass), open to the world as they help those who suffer outside the monastery.
I've made two spiritual retreats in this marvellous abbey, and found precious inner peace there. And what a pleasure it is to talk to such intelligent canons (I'm thinking of Father André, in particular). I was lucky enough to spend some wonderful time there, ringing the bells and being introduced to Gregorian chant by the choirmaster in Charlemagne's chapel.
