Khum Nuria, Cambodia.
Three Siamese crocodiles cool off in the still, green water beneath the scorching Cambodian sun. Prehistoric in appearance, they exude a quiet, almost unsettling power.
I watched them, caught between fascination and apprehension, aware that beneath this deceptive calm lies a formidable wildness.
Nature's vibrant colours may draw us closer, but beauty should never make us forget the need for caution.
Cambodia is one of the last strongholds of the Siamese crocodile, a critically endangered species whose survival hangs in the balance.
An estimated 400 individuals remain in the wild worldwide, out of a global population of around 1,000. Most wild populations are found in the Cardamom Mountains and parts of northern Cambodia.
Conservation initiatives, including captive-breeding and reintroduction programmes, are helping to give this ancient species a chance of survival.
To encounter these animals is to glimpse a distant past still alive in the present.
Their future, however, depends on what we choose to preserve today.
