The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris...
Majestic, with construction that began in 1163...
This view of the western façade largely reflects the vision of Eudes de Sully, Bishop of Paris from 1197 to 1208.
It features, from bottom to top, the level of the three portals and the four statues in niches on the buttresses, the gallery of kings, followed by a central level dominated by the west rose window, 9.6 meters in diameter, which seems to halo the statue of the Virgin and Child. On either side, beneath the towers, are twin lancet windows topped by small rose windows under pointed arches. Finally, an uppermost level of colonnades is crowned by the gallery of chimeras, connecting the two towers and extending around all four sides of the latter.
This photo was taken before the fire that completely destroyed the spire, the roofs of the nave and transept, and the timber framework in April 2019.
