Paris, France

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre, located at the top of the Montmartre hill, is a major religious building in Paris, a ‘shrine of Eucharistic adoration and divine mercy’.
The construction of this church, both a political and cultural monument, began in the aftermath of the 1870 war and was officially completed in 1923. The desire to build this basilica is part of the context of sacral recharge and its construction took place in the context of the establishment of a ‘moral order’ following the events of the Paris Commune, of which Montmartre was one of the high points. Its location at an altitude of 130 m, near one of the highest points in Paris, and its 83-metre-high dome, make it visible from very far away. With almost eleven million pilgrims and visitors a year, it is the second most visited religious monument in Paris after Notre-Dame cathedral.
Of course, I was amused by this sign indicating the nearest toilets: practical and naively irreverent at the same time!
