Banksy – The Street Art Pope…

Arriving at Bristol, you get immediately overwhelmed by the omnipresence of graffiti. Entire buildings become giant canvases dedicated to the most talented artists of Britain. Among them, Banksy, child of this city and the star of urban art.

Banksy, we can compare as the Leonardo Da Vinci of street-art an ultra-talented graffiti artist, painter and filmmaker started his career at the underground scene of Bristol in a group called “Bristol’s DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ)”.  Influenced by the trip hop (originated in and around the city of Bristol) pop-art and Andy Warhol, he becomes friends with vintage artists, Portishead and Massive Attack and engraves his early work on the walls of his city. And still he’s far away from thinking that he will become the fondling of the world, by selling his graffiti to Christina Aguilera or Kate Moss …

The idea of photo shooting  his work in this incredible city was obvious …

By mixing dark humor, politics and poetry, his message is usually anti-military, anti-capitalist, anti-system or…”anti” anything! His characters are often rats, monkeys, policemen, kids, old stars or soldiers.

With an upcoming reputation in the alternative media, the traditional media is quickly interested in Banksy. In 1999, he created one of his most famous art-work, the Mild Mild West.

Since he made his way, and Bristol is covered with his graffiti (on cities request!) the streets of New York became his canvas in 2013.

Banksy is capable to leave his art-work without authorization at the MOMA, the MET in New York, the British Museum in London, or at London Zoo, where he climbed into the penguin enclosure and painted “We’re bored of fish”, on the wall.  Cheeky humor, sales!

For over more than ten years now, Banksy appears also in movies (Children of Man, starring Julianne Moore and Clive Owen) and on album covers as Blur (Think Tank). His work sell at auction worldwide for six-figure sums…
